Toenail Fungus Treatment
Toenail Fungus Treatment
What is toenail fungus?
A fungal infection of the toenail or fingernail, also known as onychomycosis. Fungal infections can cause the nails to thicken, discolour, deform, crumble, split. While they can become painful, often they are of cosmetic concern as well.
This type of fungal infection is more common in the toes as fungal organisms are attracted to dark and humid environments such as the insides of shoes, so this makes toes the ideal breeding ground.
What causes toenail fungus?
Onychomycosis is caused by fungal organisms that invade the nail through the nail bed or nail plate. The fungus may infect a nail damaged by trauma.
The nail itself provides a protective covering that allows the fungus to grow on the nail bed, unimpeded.
This can be triggered by:
- Trauma to the nail, such as repetitive rubbing
- Poor hygiene
- Excessive sweating
- Poor peripheral circulation
- Working in wet conditions
Toenail fungus treatment
Our toenail fungus treatment uses a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser to penetrate the nail and kill the bacteria within the nail bed, without damaging the nail on the skin. The procedure is pain-free with zero side effects. After the treatment, the nail grows and pushes out fungal infection.
